According to Forbes (via the Anthesis Group), up to 30% of data center servers haven’t delivered computing services or transmitted information in 6 months. They are considered “comatose.” The Ponemon Institute estimates the average data center outage costs about $9,000 per minute of downtime. These are shocking figures! I’m not suggesting that every server should be running at 100% capacity 24/7, or that outages should be a thing of the past—but I’m confident that the teams who run data centers can do better than this.

Upcoming SAP ITOA Webinar

In our next installment of our SAP IT Operations Analytics (SAP ITOA) webinar series, Angela Harvey will explore how SAP ITOA customers are using the solution to facilitate root cause analysis, optimize resources, improve service levels to their customers, and reduce risk across IT. As the above graphic suggests, remediation costs can be significantly reduced when a holistic view of the IT landscape is available. Identifying and solving the root cause of incidents can avoid related issues down the road, such as dissatisfied customers from a slow e-commerce site or internal users unable to access a mission-critical application.

By bringing master data, such as HR information, CMDB, or commercial transactions, into SAP IT Operations Analytics, the data being gathered from the data center can be directly related to the business’ data. Not only does this serve to integrate the IT organization more fully into the business, but it can also enable some novel use cases.

For example, the images below shows the tracking data center events as a function of which service team is responsible for that area of IT. If a large spike in events is seen in server management, internal resources can be reshuffled or external resources can be brought in to deal with the issue itself or the onslaught of tickets that follows.

In a similar vein, by tracking events per license mode with SAP ITOA, organizations can prioritize customers that may have more stringent SLAs to meet. When working frantically to get back up and running after an outage, your largest customer is definitely a higher priority than the Test and Dev system.
