hot air baloonIf you watched or attended the first-day keynote at the ASUG SAP BusinessObjects User Conference earlier this month, you know that the analytics team at SAP is putting the final touches on a new release of SAP Lumira. And it’s a big one – packed with many innovations and enhancements. Here’s a teaser of some of the highlights you can expect.

SAP Lumira’s New User Experience

SP12 will sport a brand new, HTML5 user interface. This new user experience has been in the making for several months and the team has really kicked it up a notch. Nerds, technology enthusiasts, and data geeks’ eyes always sparkle when HTML 5 is mentioned. But if you are in the majority of people who don’t care too much about acronyms, it simply means two things:

  1. A much more pleasant experience for the eyes: You will immediately see the difference. The user interface is sharp, graphics look crisp, and interactions are better.
  2. A consistent user experience regardless of the device used: desktop, web browser, tablet, and so on. As SAP Lumira connects to more form factors, you can expect a familiar, consistent interface when it comes to creating or consuming data visualizations.

SAP Lumira’s Stories and Boards

Using data visualizations to convey knowledge and information is great, but we want your data helping you tell stories. It could be the story of how your sales team “crushed” the last quarter, or something you would like to bring to the attention of your team (like a missed opportunity or something unforeseen).

In Service Pack 12 for SAP Lumira, we’re introducing the concept of boards and stories. A board is like a collage of different data visualizations and filters. In the example below, I’ve created a board that includes two visualizations (graphics) and two controls (filters).

Create a few boards and put them together and you have your story. No need for coding or scripting – it’s drag and drop. And if you feel like it,  you can even have some fun by customizing the background.

SAP Lumira Integrates with Your Existing SAP Investments

If you already have an IT infrastructure that includes SAP HANA, SAP BusinessObjects BI, or SAP Netweaver BusinessWarehouse (SAP Netweaver BW),  you can expect SAP Lumira SP12 to support SAP HANA SP6, SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.1. and SAP Netweaver BW.

SAP Lumira already leverages SAP HANA models based on the InfoProviders in SAP Netweaver BW, but SP12 will also offer connectivity to business warehouse data sources via business warehouse relational universes. There’ll be more to come on this in the upcoming days.

SAP Lumira’s  Personal Edition Update Is Free

If you have Excel data and you want to see it using visualizations, then you need SAP Lumira personal edition – and it won’t cost you a dime. Technically, this is not new for SP12, since SAP Lumira personal edition has been free since July 29, 2013.

But anyone who has the personal edition will be able to upgrade to SP12 for free as well!  If you haven’t yet tried SAP Lumira, don’t wait.  Just go to, download the application, and start using it against your Excel data. You will be able to update it when SP12 becomes available.
