Businesswoman touching digital tablet in officeIt’s a great time to upgrade to release 4.1 of the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) platform. We’ve simplified our BI solutions and added robust new functionality. In my last blog, I went over the enhanced usability and integration features that BI 4.1 has to offer.

Today, I’ll describe the variety of updated mobile and self-service BI features available. This new functionality will help you reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) for your analytics solutions.

BI 4.1 Offers New Mobile Functionality

BI 4.1 enables access to the SAP BusinessObjects Mobile mobile app on iOS, Android, and BlackBerry operating systems. You can make informed decisions based on targeted, personalized information – anywhere and anytime. You can also create your own add-on components with the Javascript solution developer kit.

All BI 4.1 clients that are part of the SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.1 suite are enabled for mobile consumption. SAP BusinessObjects Explorer software has been embedded within the mobile BI client for BI 4.1. The SAP Lumira Cloud platform and SAP Lumira server technology can be defined as dedicated connections.

Other mobile functionality:

  • SAP Lumira desktop content can be enabled for mobile with SAP Lumira Cloud or SAP Lumira Server.
  • Dashboards can be consumed by the SAP BusinessObjects Mobile mobile app, which now supports mobile-added HTML5 output.
  • SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio applications stored in the SAP BusinessObjects BI platform are native HTML5.
  • The Microsoft Office edition and OLAP edition of SAP BusinessObjects Analysis can create SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio applications from workbooks, which enables them for mobile consumption.
  • BI 4.1 offers increased support for mobile functionality in SAP Crystal Reports software and SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence software.

Mobile is now easier to access with the BI 4.1 platform.

BI 4.1 installs these mobile services by default. There’s no need to run additional installation routines to enable mobile BI within your platform or to manually deploy Web application server containers. In addition, you can manage all security settings directly from the central management console, as deployed by the installer. All platforms supported by BI 4.1 can now be used to deploy mobile services. Dependencies on Microsoft Windows and Apache Tomcat have been eliminated.

BI 4.1 Offers New Self-Service BI Features

Because budgets are shrinking, many IT organizations are seeking new ways to maximize their BI investments. Intuitive self-service BI features help users to acquire information and insights quickly so they can rapidly respond to market dynamics.

With BI tools such as SAP Lumira, SAP Business Explorer, and SAP BusinessObjects Analysis, self-service BI is more straightforward and intuitive. These tools are accessible from any platform, including mobile, Web, and desktop, whether users are online or offline. Users can run queries for fast answers. They can quickly transform and personalize data without scripting, and they need no advanced training to lead their own data discoveries.

SAP solutions support self-service business intelligence

With self-service features also available in the cloud, users can access, explore, and share data without the help of IT, right from their tablets or notebooks. By creating a clear path to both big picture insights and granular details, self-service BI features help users gain faster time-to-insight and maximize business knowledge.

All these self-service BI and mobile features of BI 4.1 can help you reduce your total cost of ownership.  I’ll discuss how in more detail in my Part 3, which will publish the first week of January 2015. Stay tuned.
