Businesswoman touching digital tablet in officeCalling all Data Geniuses! Wayne Eckerson is the first data visualization thought leader in the Data Genius webinar series. Wayne will share his thoughts and experiences on business intelligence and analytics.

You’ve invested heavily in creating trusted data and implementing analytics but creating a true information-driven culture, where every single decision maker at every level has the right data to make better, more profitable decisions, is a challenge on tight IT budget. This is where some of Wayne’s thoughts on why visual design standards improve analytical literacy come in.

Data doesn’t communicate itself. You need visualizations and a story to do that. But when each individual starts with a blank slate you create inefficiencies and waste resources and you may end up with potentially confusing visualizations that don’t communicate the right message. This is why Wayne recommends that companies adopt visual standards since data visualization experts are a scarce and expensive commodity.

Wayne believes that there’s great power when you use visualizations to communicate information quickly. But data visualization is in its infancy and many companies fall into the trap of using pseudo designers to create dashboards. What gets “lost in the headlong creative rush” is the very message behind the data that induces leaders to know, decide, and act. Wayne defines a visual standard as “a standard that forms a common language and syntax for creating and consuming visualizations throughout a company.”
