When the SAP HANA team started their co-innovation project with SAP IT, the whole point was to make life easier by harnessing the power of SAP HANA to deliver a predictive, holistic view of the datacenter in real time. In the iterations of SAP IT Operations Analytics (SAP ITOA) that have followed, these principles have been a guiding light with an ever expanding list of data sources and tighter integration with SAP Predictive Analytics.

Now, as a product team, we have committed to making it even easier to connect to SAP systems and common infrastructure by delivering out-of-the-box content packages containing pre-built data connectors and dashboards. We’re even supplying demo data so users can experience the value before hooking up their own system.

So, to coincide with the release of Support Pack 04, we are pleased to announce three such content packages: one for monitoring SAP ITOA, one for Nagios integration, and one for simplified root cause analysis.

SAP ITOA Monitoring

This content package provides a performance dashboard to analyze the memory utilization of SAP IT Operations Analytics and the health status of the SAP HANA instance that SAP ITOA is running on with metrics such as CPU and Memory. The utilization can be split out by SAP HANA table to see how each incoming data source is contributing to overall memory utilization.

For example, in the image below you can see values for streaming syslogs, SAP Host Agent metrics, Nagios data, and information from Lenovo Xclarity. The average size for each type of event is also available since the number of events is also recorded. All this information helps users size their SAP ITOA installation, ensuring you only pay for the data that’s useful to your use case.

Nagios Integration

This content package provides SAP IT Operations Analytics users with out-of-the-box integration for the open source infrastructure monitoring tool Nagios. A pre-defined rule for the Attribute Editor is provided for Nagios logs, making it simple to keep the information you want and offload the rest of the data to warm or cold storage to maximize the space in hot, SAP HANA memory. The content package also contains an interactive dashboard, known as a story, that allows users to drill down into specific pieces of infrastructure monitored by Nagios.

As seen in the image below, a particular time range can be selected for a specific server to get insight on server performance using the standard KPIs such as Storage, Network, and Load as well as other information like events and alerts. Master data can also be related to specific infrastructure to demonstrate the impact that IT has on the overall business.

Root Cause Analysis

This content package simplifies the root cause analysis process, enabling IT teams to solve underlying issues and prevent future incidents. The pre-built dashboards and stories focus on the standard IT KPIs (CPU, Memory, Network, and Load) and how they are affected by the processes running at that time. By relating these metrics to a specific instance, issues can be discovered and addressed before causing a catastrophic incident or even a constant annoyance in the form of a slow application.

By using the root cause analysis tools available in SAP ITOA, IT organizations can greatly increase the availability and efficiency of their managed systems.

The release of these three content packages is a great start but there’s lots more to come. Watch for more content packages to be released soon, as well as their availability on the SAP App Center. If you have a suggestion for a content package you’d find useful in your own environment or are interested in building your own content package, leave a response below.
